What is VoIP
VoIP (Voice over IP) is a transmission protocol for telephone calls by sending voice data in
packets using IP rather than traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN (Public Switched
Telephone Network).
Please Note:
VoIP Internet telephone does have a couple downsides. Most importantly, 911 emergency
calls will likely work differently then local phone service. Moreover, VoIP telephone service
will fail during power outages unless backup power supplies are implemented.
While there are strong incentives to use VoIP, no amount of money saved will be worth it if
you cannot reach emergency services during a crisis; please make sure everyone utilizing IP
phones understands how to obtain emergency assistance.
